Via Them \\ The Odyssey isn’t “woke,” it’s a mirror...
| |||
I started sobbing in the final act of The Odyssey, and the tears didn’t dry until after the credits rolled. Perhaps I should have expected the director of Oppenheimer to turn Homer’s epic into a meditation on the morality of war, but I was completely punched in the gut by what Christopher Nolan accomplished.
If you haven’t managed to make it out to see the movie during — or since — its opening weekend, I won’t say anything else here. Ignore the bigotry around the casting of Elliot Page and Lupita Nyong'o, and just get yourself to a theater — but don’t get waylaid by any sirens along the way!
And if you’ve already seen the film, join me and my colleague Quispe López for our spoiler-filled discussion below. We dive deep into its themes, the narrative choices, and the absurd backlash.

T.S. Elliot
We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
