In
this dharma talk, given as part of the Black, Indigenous, and People of
Color (BIPOC) Retreat at IMS’s Retreat Center in June, Ruth King
explains that happiness is not to be found externally, but by turning
inward and exploring how we work with the causes and conditions that
arise in our hearts and minds. She reflects on the Five Hindrances,
specifically restlessness and worry, and provides strategies for working
with them.
“If
the hindrance continues to be intense and you're fatigued from the
habit of mind, you can say, ‘No, not now,’ and return to your anchor—the
breath, body, walking, etc. We get to choose whether we are going to be
in the habit of suffering or not. Because that's our responsibility. We
can't stop the mind from thinking. But we can shift how we're in
relationship to it.”
