Dear Daniel,
Today, GLAAD released Where We Are in Film, the new name for our award-winning Studio Responsibility Index, where GLAAD looks at the quantity, quality, and diversity of LGBTQ representation. This year, we analyzed 225 major studio releases to measure the quantity, quality, and diversity of LGBTQ representation.
This year’s findings saw some significant decreases, including: Of the 225 films tracked in this year’s study, 46 contained LGBTQ characters (20.4%)—the third consecutive year of decline. There were zero transgender characters counted in the 2025 slate of films. Of the 112 LGBTQ characters, 34 (30%) are characters of color, a decrease from the 36% counted the previous year.
There are still bright spots in 2025’s slate of films: For the first time in three years, studios included LGBTQ characters living with HIV. Horror films were a bright spot for LGBTQ inclusion and paid off at the box office In fact, every theatrically released LGBTQ-inclusive horror film tracked in this study with budget information publicly available earned more than double their production budget at the box office. Mid-budget films ($15-90 million production budget) and indie studio labels continue to be a place where GLAAD found significant representation of LGBTQ stories.
As it stands, the film industry has a lot to lose by not including LGBTQ voices. Gen Z are currently the largest share of movie-goers, as well as the queerest generation yet. This, combined with the LGBTQ communities estimated $1.4 trillion of purchasing power in the U.S. alone, means that if these studios want this powerful audience, they need to invest in our stories.
